Problem
A user who previously had a Notes R4 Desktop License has upgraded to the Notes 5.0 Designer Client. Even though the user has a Desktop license, the user is able to make design changes. Shouldn't the Desktop license prevent this?
Solution
This issue was reported to Lotus Quality Engineering; however, it was determined not to be a software problem. Notes is functioning as designed.
Notes License types are no longer implemented in R5.0, due to a change in Lotus policy. All users are automatically upgraded to Lotus Notes Full License, and the code that implemented License types has been removed.
If a user does not require design features, only the appropriate Notes 5.0 Client should be installed. Please note that there is a chance that the user could obtain a Notes installation CD and install the Designer client themselves.
Supporting Information:
There are three types of Notes 5.0 clients:
1. Notes Client - this is the standard type of Notes client, without Design features.
2. Domino Designer - the Notes Client with design environment and design features.
3. Domino Administrator - the Notes Client with Administration environment and Administrative tasks.
NOTE: Please note that the Notes Release 5.x Person document contains the following choices for license type:
Lotus Notes
Lotus Notes Mail
Lotus Notes Desktop
Lotus Notes Designer
Lotus Notes Administration
These five Notes client license types are ONLY for backward R4.x compatability and have no relevance in Notes R5. In R5, registering users creates a full Notes license. The R5 Notes client restricts the Notes client capabilities. These choices can be seen in the Person document (in the Public Address Book) under the "Administration" tab and selecting "Notes Client Licenses."
