Client 6.0.3, September 26, 2003

Die Wörterbücher sind alle im Data Verzeichnis. Reparieren der Installation half leider nichts.
Weiß jemand, wie das zu beheben ist ?

Evtl. hilft das:

Problem

When you attempt to check the spelling (via the Edit > Check Spelling menu) in a document in a Notes database the following error message appears:

"Error during main dictionary spell initialization".

The error can occur if the Notes.ini setting "SPELL_DIR=<directory>" is being used.  The SPELL_DIR parameter does not abide by any changes.  This issue was addressed in Notes 6.0.2 CF1 Client.

Excerpt from the Lotus Notes and Domino Release 6.0.2 CF1 MR fix list (available at http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/lotus/):

Editor
Notes client is not respecting SPELL_DIR notes.ini parameter for location of dictionary files. This problem has been fixed in 6.0.2 CF1.

Workaround:

1.  Set the following parameter in Notes.ini:  Spell_Dir=c:\lotus\notes\data.
2.  Move the user.dic local to the workstation and download the user dictionary to the local workstation.

'Error during spell initialization' in Notes Client on Win 2000, Win NT, and Win XP

Problem

When you attempt to spell check a document in Notes R5 Client the following error message occurs:

 "Error during spell initialization"

This problem affects Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows NT users.

"Error during spell termination" is another error message that has been reported due to this issue.

The problem is caused by the naming scheme of the system Temp directory in the Windows 2000/NT operating system (OS).  By default, the system Temp directory is set up as "C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp".  The spell check installation program, however, has a limited amount of space to store the path to the temporary directory and thus, cannot use long paths such as this.

This problem was reported to Lotus Quality Engineering, and was addressed in Notes 5.0.8 Client and Notes 6.0 Client.

Excerpt from the Lotus Notes and Domino Release 5.0.8 MR fix list (available at http://www.notes.net):

Editor - Spelling
SPR# JGON4LZJEY - Error message "Error during spell initialization" was received by Windows 2000 users when attempting to use spell check on any database. This problem has been fixed in 5.0.8. A workaround is to make sure that the path to the Windows temp directory is not particularly long. For example, a path directly nested four levels could reproduce this problem.

Important Note:  This issue can still occur in more recent releases of Notes (such as 6.0.x and 6.5.x) if there was a previous Notes 5.0.7 (or earlier) release installed on the workstation.  This issue has been reported to occur in Notes 6.0.1 Client on the Windows XP platform, with a slightly different error message text:

"Error during main dictionary spell initialization".

This issue has been reported to Quality Engineering as SPR# SBRN5LER3R. It has been difficult to reproduce but is thought that a previous install of R5 is the culprit.  Specifics:

When upgrading the Notes Client from R5 to 6.x, the R5 registry keys still remain in the Windows Registry.  The crash can be resolved by deleting the registry key under:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE - ->  SOFTWARE - - >  Lotus - - >  Notes (5.0)

Important Note:  The information above is presented as a guideline for making relevant changes within the Microsoft Windows Registry.  The Windows Registry is central to the operation of Windows, so any changes should be performed with great care.  As with any major configuration change, it is highly recommended that customers have complete backups of their computer systems before attempting the following procedure, in order to allow recovery from system file corruption or other failures.  If you require instruction about backing up and modifying the Windows Registry, first contact your system administrator or reference one of the third-party guides available for advanced Windows topics.

Workaround in Notes R5:
The workaround to this problem is to create a c:\temp directory and change the system settings in the OS to make that directory the system Temp directory. This may correct the problem in some instances, but in most cases, the user will also have to then reinstall Notes. The user installing Notes must have full access rights to the Temp directory created.

To change the system settings to designate a different Temp directory:

1. Ensure that a Temp directory exists on your client workstation, or create one if needed. (example:  c:\temp, etc.)
2. Select Start on the Windows 2000 task bar, then select Settings, Control Panel.
3. Double-click the System icon.
4. Switch to the Advanced tab, then select the Environmental Variables button.
5. In the User Variables box, highlight the TEMP variable and select the Edit button.  Replace the current contents of the Variable Value box (example: "%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temp" with the exact syntax of your Temp directory you designated in Step 1 above (for example, c:\temp).
6. In the System Variables box, perform this same task: highlight the TEMP variable and select the Edit button.   Replace the current contents of the Variable Value box (example: "%SystemRoot\Temp") with the exact syntax of your Temp directory you designated in Step 1 above (for example, c:\temp).

The root cause of the problem is the use of the temporary directory by the install program.  The install program places numerous files in the Temp directory on the root drive of the machine it is installed from.  When the install program cannot find a Temp directory to use, the necessary files are not updated and the error occurs when trying to spell check a document.

If the error still occurs after correcting the location of the Temp subdirectory, exit Notes, delete or rename the Cache.dsk file on that client workstation, and restart Notes.  In one known customer case, this process eliminated the spellcheck error.

Supporting Information:

Once the environment variables are changed per the instructions above, most of the spell check issues will cease, with the exception of cases where specific characters are used in words in the user dictionary or document to be spell checked  (for example, the tilde (~) character,  and the use of multiple underscores).     The issue with the "~" character causing a "Cannot add word to user dictionary" error is described in the document, "Words with Acute Accent (`) in the User Dictionary Cause Error "Cannot Add Word to User Dictionary"" (#1096021).

The issue with the Notes Client crashing due to multiple underscores is described in the document, "Notes R5 Client Crashes Spell Checking Document with Consecutive Underscores" (#1099492).
